Beit She'arim

Inside the ground, deep in the hill’s slope, the residents of ancient Beit She'arim dug a magnificent burial city, to which one gains access through ancient courtyards, passageways and stairs, which lead into great halls within which are dug burial chambers, and in them are unique stone sarcophagi. The ancient settlement of Beit She'arim is located near Kiryat Tiv'on and it served as the central burial place of the Jewish world in the Mishna and Talmud period (1st - 7th centuries CE). At the entrance to each cave there is an open area and the chambers and sarcophagi present stone reliefs, writings and murals which represent the popular Jewish art of the Roman period. All burial caves show descriptions and illustrations of Jewish religious artifacts, such as the seven-branched Menorah, the Ark of the Covenant, shofar (a traditional Jewish blowing horn used for religious purposes), Lulav and Etrog (a palm branch and the fruit of a citron tree, two of the "Four Species” mentioned in the Bible and used in the religious rites of the Jewish Holiday of Sukkot). In addition, there are artworks here with secular subjects, which feature items such as ships, animals and human figures. Doors carved in stone close some of the caves’ openings.
