The Dominus Flevit Church on the Mount of Olives in Jerusalem is considered to be one of the most beautiful churches in the area, and not only because its dome’s large teardrop shape. This teardrop shape originates from the church’s name (which translates from Latin as "The Lord Wept"). This refers to the weeping of Jesus during his prediction of the future destruction of Jerusalem. The Dominus Flevit Church is built on top of the remains of a Byzantine monastery and ancient graves from the time of the Second Jewish Temple. The modern church, which was inaugurated in 1955, was designed by the Italian architect Antonio Barluzzi (who designed quite a few Christian structures around Israel). The large teardrop is only one representation of Jesus’ weeping – in the Dominus Flevit Church also stand four pillars that are reminiscent in their shape of the bottles that were meant to collect those teardrops. On the eastern side of the Dominus Flevit Church is seen the beautiful view of the Old City.
Arrival at the Dominus Flevit Church: the church is located on the top of the Mount of Olives, about 250 meters south-east of the Lion’s Gate (near the Church of Mary Magdalene).
