The Ein Kerem Neighborhood

Ein Kerem is a kind of an urban bubble, which seems to take one to different times, and some places in it look like they were taken from Biblical times: a small village situated among photogenic agricultural terraces and rich orchards. In the last hundreds of years a small village existed here and in 1948 it was deserted and was inhabited by Jews, who generally managed to maintain its original character of small stone houses and narrow alleys which wind between them. Ein Kerem is sacred to Christianity as according to tradition it was the birthplace of John the Baptist. As such it features many monasteries and churches. Even though it is considered to be a neighborhood of the city of Jerusalem, it is a little disconnected from it due to its unique topography.
