Florentin Neighborhood

Florentin Neighborhood is located in the south of Tel Aviv and along the years it has become a home for many young people who were looking for a cheaper area to live in together with a bit of an alternative atmosphere away from the "city”. The neighborhood of Florentin, which is near the border between Tel Aviv and Jaffa, is named after David Florentin, who was one of the founders of the Zionist movement in Thessaloniki, Greece. The neighborhood of Florentin was founded in 1927 and served as a home for workshops and small businesses, but toward the end of the 1960s its residents started to abandon it and it became much neglected. A renewal process of Florentin Neighborhood started in the 1990s, which included the renovation of buildings and opening of cafés, designers’ shops and art galleries. This process attracted many young people who came to live here or hang out, and today Florentin is known as a major entertainment area of the city which attracts many young people. In the eastern part of the neighborhood of Florentin is found the famous Levinsky Market and the neighborhood of Florentin itself starred in a show by the same name which was screened on the Israeli Channel 2 in the end of the 1990s.
