Martyrius was the name of a hermit from the Byzantine period, who built a monastery at the edge of the Judean Desert, which is now located in the center of a neighborhood in the city of Ma'ale Adumim. It is as surreal as it sounds. This place, open to prearranged visits only or during special tours which the Israel Nature and Parks Authority arranges here, is located in an area which includes several structural remains such as stables, church, chapel, dining room, water cistern, bath house, hostel for pilgrims to the monastery and more. A visit will also reveal mosaic floors here and there, some of which are in a good condition. The area of this site is about 10 dunams and it was dug by archeologists during the 1980s.
