It is fairly easy to get to Metsad Tamar Overnight Campground, located in the Judean Desert, with a vehicle. But here the conveniences end and the direct connection with nature begins. Metsad Tamar Overnight Campground offers no toilets, showers or running water, and certainly no electricity and other indulgences. It is situated on the Israel National Trail and serves its travelers - which makes for encounters with travelers who have a great number of stories to tell. The campground is found next to Metsad Tamar (Tamar stronghold) that initially served the Romans and was active from the 3rd to the 7th centuries CE. Today the stronghold’s ruin includes the structure’s square outline, walls of hewn stone, an inner courtyard, rooms and more. Ancient history, desert sparseness and a connection with nature – one really does not need any more.
Arrival at Metsad Tamar Overnight Campground: located on the northern side of road number 25 (there is a sign directing toward the stronghold near the 118 kilometer stone marking).
