The colorful sands site at HaMakhtesh HaGadol (The Big Crater), which is on Mount Negev, provides a surprise: many of the travelers that come here enjoy the many colors of this unique geological landscape and even fill up clear bottles with it, but they are not aware that there is also an overnight campground here. The Colorful Sands Overnight Campground offers a modest and secluded place for a desert overnight stay, as well as many close by trails. The Colorful Sands Overnight Campground is not for the gentle, but in return it offers a complete and powerful nature experience. If you arrive early enough you will get to position your tent at the foot of one of the trees that will give you shade in the morning. The Colorful Sands Overnight Campground offers water taps and vehicle accessibility and it is open all-year-round. There are no toilets, showers or electricity here and entrance is free of charge.
Arrival at the Colorful Sands Overnight Campground: on road number 25 (Be’er Sheva – HaArava Junction) turn south to road number 206 and drive on it until you arrive at a turn to the west to road number 225 that passes in the big crater. After about 1.5 kilometers turn north into the parking lot according to the signs. It is also possible to arrive here through Yeruham.
