About fifty years ago, a visit to this area of Old Jaffa might have been surprisingly different than today. This is due to the extensive development, reconstruction and renovation works which were done here during the 1960s by the Old Jaffa Development Corporation. Among other things, plazas were built in open spaces here, streets were paved in decorative tiles, decorative gardens were nurtured and most importantly, this area became a unique Artists’ Quarter. As such, it includes art galleries and numerous workshops, some of which specialize in Judaica items. HaSimta Theater ("The Alley Theater ") is also found here. The Artists’ Quarter, the streets of which are named after the twelve signs of the zodiac, is filled with a unique atmosphere, such that preserves well the glory of the past but which also brings with it a fresh breeze.
