This site, situated within the local basalt landscape and looking over the Sea of Galilee, presents the remains of an ancient Jewish town. The town of Korazim is first mentioned in the time of the Second Temple, especially in relation to the fine and famous wheat that its inhabitants cultivated here. This town has flourished at the end of the Mishnaic period and during the Talmudic period. It is also mentioned in the New Testament together with Bethsaida and Capernaum as one of the places which Jesus cursed because they did not heed his teachings. The ancient synagogue at Korazim, which was built at the end of the 4th century or the beginning of the 5th century, is considered to be one of the most beautiful discovered in Israel. It is made of basalt and decorated with carvings of floral and faunal patterns, human figures pressing grapes and even lions.
