Fishing in the
Sea of Galilee is as ancient as human settlement in the area. This is one of the things that one realizes on a visit to one of the smallest and most modest and specialized museums in Israel- a museum that is dedicated mainly to anchors which were found in the Sea of Galilee, some of which are thousands of years old. Here, at
Beit HaOganim (
The House of Anchors)
Museum, at the
Kibbutz of Ein Gev, you will find an abundance of anchors, manufactured from stone and iron, in numerous shapes and sizes, that were made for various sizes of boats. Beit HaOganim (The House of Anchors) Museum, which was established by Mendel Nun, a member of the Kibbutz of Ein Gev, a researcher of the Sea of Galilee and a fisherman in his past, includes also a collection of fishing net sinkers- stone weights which the ancient fishermen at the Sea of Galilee once fastened to their nets in order to weight them down, a selection of ritual stones called "shfifon” and other items. On the walls of the House of Anchors Museum, are hung, among other things, drawings of ancient harbors on the shores of the Sea of Galilee, pictures of fish that are characteristic to the Sea of Galilee and more.
